    Nitrate acts as the terminal electron acceptor for anaerobic oxidation of organic matter by facultatively anaerobic, nitrate-respiring bacteria in the suboxic and anoxic regions of the sediment. The rate of nitrate-respiration is a function of both the concentration of nitrate and the concentration of available organic electron donors (organic substrates) within the sediment.
